The Auchrannie resort includes a hotel, spa and luxury lodges. The website had to showcase the facilities at Auchrannie and imagery is used extensively throughout the site to create a distinctive user experience that is interactive and demonstrates what a visit to Auchrannie is like. ![]() As large imagery is used through the site and people will be viewing the site in a number of screen sizes, a challenge for the Alienation development team was to ensure the images would be proportionately scaled down according to the screen size of the person viewing the site. It was also important that image resize would be fluid for people who resize their browsers while viewing the site. The new website had to be compatible with the Auchrannie existing booking system, recruitment site and social media, all of which are integrated with the new site.

Very much style over substance. While the website looks very nice its a usability nightmare. 3 conflicting navigation bars, no clear calls to action and no information of any substance on the home page. Not only that when you do find some information its stuck in a measly thin column on the right.

Thanks for your comments Allan.
Whilst we would agree that there are some elements not considered best practise, we would wholeheartedly disagree that it is "style over substance". At the end of the day it is very much what the client wanted (and yes, we did offer advice on what is/isn't best practice, as we do with all clients) - a site that showcases the resort through the photographs which the client is very very happy with. It's early days, but let us report back later with some stats to show if it is or is not a success. written by Allan, April 12, 2011
Thats a fair point, Neil. At the end of the day what the client wants the client gets and sometimes they're not for turning, or don't always appreciate the same aesthetics that those of us who actually work in the industry do.
The site is visually striking and i'm sure it's well built, I just feel that it could be a lot friendlier to use. For me, at the moment, I feel that any user would be navigating blind and has to do a lot of work to get to the meatier information within the site. Write comment
