In an official statement posted on the Google Affiliate Network (GAN) blog yesterday, the internet giant cited a desire to invest in cost-per-action channels other than affiliate marketing as the driving force behind the decision to wind down the platform.

Legend has it that the first ever affiliate marketing campaign was launched by Amazon way back in 1996. With blogs and deals forums beginning to take the Internet by storm, the online giant recognised that sites such as these were referring buying traffic to Amazon and they wanted to exploit this further. They began incentivising the bloggers with commission - paying them each time their traffic converted into a sale - and affiliate marketing was born.
